End-to-end redesign of 'Events' product on Nextdoor, from Event Creation, Listings, Sharing and Notifications. With place and proximity being Nextdoor’s core differentiators, Events was a key use case for Nextdoor and a key strategic product to achieve its product vision of building an ‘Active Valued Community’.
Problem
1. Inadequate functionality of critical features such as ‘Attendee List’
2. Poor event discovery and distribution resulting in low engagement
3. The "Ghost Town" Effect: 75% of events had no attendees, discouraging others from RSVPing, kneecapping the whole event flywheel
Key Design Decisions
The event product functioned like a marketplace, requiring thoughtful design across 3 critical surfaces: Creation, Distribution and Consumption. Only by designing them as an integrated system will an engagement loop be created.
Unified Composer
Unified the Event Composer with the Main Composer, moving it from a rarely visited sub-menu to the main feed. This normalized Event creation, increasing its visibility in the feed and spurring more creation.
RSVP Loop
Designed a RSVP loop through low friction “Interested” RSVP action and making sharing of the event easy. This creates second order effects on the entire Events ecosystem: RSVP actions would trigger notifications, thereby increasing engagement.
Impact
The redesign successfully converted low engagement events into high-value content for the platform, increasing posting, engagement and RSVPs.
