A visual first, freeform composer experience that allows users to compose first and add attachments later. Improving the usability of the composer was paramount as Nextdoor’s top-line metric, Weekly Active Users (WAU) is driven by post supply. Higher posting leads to more notifications and better feed engagement; the existing composer was a bottleneck to this "virtuous cycle."
Problem
High friction experience: Users were forced to choose from confusing categories (like "Ask a Neighbor" vs “Post”) before they could even start typing. Users often confuse the use cases e.g. 56% of "Urgent Alerts" were actually about Lost & Found.
Key Design Decisions
Free form first, structure second
Only half of Android users make it to an actual composer screen, while only 2/3 of iOS users do. 100% of web users do, since there are no category selection screens.
Instead of forcing a "Subject" and "Category" upfront, the design shifted to a unified, free-form text box. This reduced the number of steps to start composing from 3 steps to 1, eliminating the initial steps on mobile and reducing unnecessary friction.
Optional "Add-on Attachments"
Specific post types (Polls, Events, Safety) were moved from being "modes" you enter to "attachments" you add to a standard post. Add-on attachments enable rich use cases to thrive, but are optional. Users often confuse the use cases for categories. This prevents users from being shuttled down long branched flows that lead to abandonment.
Adding friction to post discard
Designed an exit confirmation screen when users exited the composer midway of inputting content. This recaptured users who were seconds away from posting but exited by mistake, and allowed users to pick up where they left.
Impact
The redesign was directly tied to Nextdoor’s ability to scale content and retain users.
Increased Post Volume & Feed Supply+5% in posts
+50% Safety Flow completion
Increased Content Quality+7% posts with media
WAU Growth+10% engagement per view
